Freesbe
Business and up

Keep your phone system, add the chat.

Freesbe speaks standard SIP, so the desk phones and softphones you own register with it, whatever the brand. Running your own phone system? An admin connects it once (sip.io today, with its API address, account ID and key) and from then on each person copies a SIP server, username and password into their phone. Leavers' devices are turned off and their passwords scrambled.

  • Standard SIP: any desk phone or softphone, any brand, no adapter.
  • Keep the numbers, the plan and the phones you already have.
  • Hand out phone logins without a spreadsheet: each person fetches their own.
  • Close a leaver's line the moment they go, with the password scrambled.
  • Match each device to the sip.io user with the same email, when you trust the addresses.

For Companies running their own SIP phone system who want Freesbe for chat and calls without moving numbers.

Workspace settings, Phone system: the sip.io connection with the API address, account ID and key

Connected in three fields

In the Admin Center under Phone, Settings, enter the sip.io API address, your account ID and your API key, and click Connect sip.io. The key is stored encrypted and never shown again. Tick Assign each device to the sip.io user with the same email to link each device to the matching PBX user and extension; only addresses people have verified are matched. Disconnect turns off every device Freesbe made and scrambles its password, so nobody keeps a working line by accident.

Each person sets up their own phone

Open Preferences, Calls & audio, Phone and click Set up my phone. Freesbe shows your SIP server, username and password; copy the three into a desk phone or softphone, save, and wait for it to register. Passwords are read from sip.io when someone asks to see theirs; Freesbe never stores them. Change password gives you a new one that works at once, and any phone using the old one stops until you enter the new one. A desk phone registers straight with sip.io, so calls work when Freesbe is closed.

The dialpad in the top bar

Click the phone button in the top bar, dial a number, and pressing call hands it to your computer's phone app, any app registered for tel: links, such as your softphone. Numbers are formatted as you type, the way your country writes them, and the Recent tab lists your calls. If Test mode shows at the top of your phone settings, the workspace hasn't connected sip.io yet and the credentials are placeholders for trying the setup.

Questions

Does it have to be sip.io?
The phones don't: anything that speaks SIP registers, and with the phone system from Freesbe an admin hands out SIP credentials for any desk phone or softphone from the Admin Center. The phone system an admin connects as a whole, with its API, is sip.io today.
Which plan includes this?
The phone line and dialpad come with Business, Corporate and Enterprise. A workspace uses either its own phone system or the phone system from Freesbe, not both.
Does Freesbe store our SIP passwords?
No. Passwords are read from sip.io when someone asks to see theirs, and the API key is stored encrypted and never shown again.
What happens when someone leaves?
Their device is turned off and its password scrambled. Disconnecting sip.io, or connecting a different account, does the same to every device Freesbe made.
Can we switch to the phone system from Freesbe later?
Yes. Disconnect sip.io first, then turn on the phone system from Freesbe and buy or port numbers.
